A Strong Engine of ‘Make in India’ & ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’

Alstom has achieved over 85% localisation, supported by a deep domestic supply chain and more than 10,000 skilled jobs created across multiple states. With this, India has become only the sixth country in the world capable of manufacturing such high-powered locomotives domestically.
Reflecting on the journey, Olivier Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India, said:
“This is a moment of great pride as we celebrate a decade-long partnership that has truly transformed India’s freight landscape. Beyond delivering India’s most powerful locomotives, we have created a world-class industrial ecosystem, strengthened local talent, and reinforced India’s ambitions for self-reliance. Our commitment remains stronger than ever as we continue to boost green logistics and contribute to India’s emergence as a global hub for rail solutions.”
Performance, Technology & Impact
* The first WAG-12B entered commercial service in May 2020.
* By October 2020, the Ministry of Railways and CRS/RDSO authorised these locomotives to operate at 120 km/h.
* This year, owing to high demand, these locomotives were also deployed to haul passenger trains during the festive peak season.
Alstom has also established ultra-modern maintenance depots in Saharanpur and Nagpur, equipped with predictive technologies and supported by prompt response teams across India. Over 22,000 Indian Railways staff have been trained in Saharanpur, Nagpur, and Sabarmati.
World-Class Manufacturing Capability
The 250-acre Madhepura facility follows global standards of safety and quality, with a production capacity of 120 locomotives per year. The WAG-12B locomotives feature:
* IGBT-based propulsion
* Regenerative braking for reduced energy consumption
* Broad-gauge design for high-speed performance on sharp curves
* Capability to operate between -50°C and +50°C
* Improved driver comfort with AC cabins, workspace enhancements, food-preparation modules, and toilets
Social & Economic Impact
The Alstom–Indian Railways partnership has positively impacted over 30,000 people through initiatives in education, health, women empowerment, and skill development across 21 villages around Madhepura and Saharanpur. Alstom works closely with partners such as AIF, Seeds Impact, and LLF to drive sustainable development in local communities.
For over a century, Alstom has been contributing to India’s progress and remains a key partner in India’s “rail revolution” through advanced, future-ready mobility solutions.
